Mbombela pitch to be relayed this week

MBOMBELA Municipality mayor Lassy Chiwayo is relieved that the process to relay the 2010 Fifa World Cup pitch will be completed this week.

MBOMBELA Municipality mayor Lassy Chiwayo is relieved that the process to relay the 2010 Fifa World Cup pitch will be completed this week.

The municipality was advised to relay the pitch, a process that cost R5million, by the Local Organising Committee technical team due to insufficient drainage.

Sowetan has learnt that 25 percent of the original turf supplied had been grown in clay and this had affected the drainage.

The problem was exposed after a rainy spell in Nelspruit left the new stadium waterlogged.

Chiwayo said the municipality did not contribute a cent to the project, with the costs being borne by the contractors.

The municipal games from February 26 to 28 will officially open the stadium. "We are also happy that two teams who have qualified for the World Cup, Ghana and Uruguay will play at the new stadium on March 3," added Chiwayo. - additional reporting by Reuters
