A POLICE officer was shot dead while attempting to arrest suspected criminals.

The incident happened at GaRakgoadi village in Motetema, Limpopo, on New Year's Day.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba yesterday identified the officer as Inspector Kgobishi Sonnyboy Tladi, 54, who came from Tsimanyana village near Marble Hall.

He said Tladi and his colleagues had been investigating criminal elements within the village when they came across a group of men at about 9am on January 1.

One of the men allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Tladi once in the head. He fell down and died instantly.

"We managed to arrest two men aged 25 and 30 and recovered four illegal firearms from them," Ramatseba said.

He said one of the men, believed to have been responsible for pulling the trigger and killing Tladi, managed to flee.

"We have since launched a hunt for the man," he said.

Ramatseba also appealed to Kgotlelelo Mogadima, 21, a resident in the area, to come forward and assist with investigations in the matter.

"We believe Mogadima will assist us a great deal in our investigations into Tladi's killing," he said.

He called on members of the community with information regarding the matter, or regarding Mogadima's whereabouts, to alert the nearest police station or call Superintendent Rocks Morokong on 082-414-6464.

Those arrested are expected to appear in the Motetema magistrate's court soon.

In an unrelated incident, police are investigating the killing of Thabo Pilusa on New Year's Eve.

Pilusa, 25, was allegedly attacked by three men at Zone 4 Seshego at about 11.45pm.

He was assaulted with an assortment of objects and killed before his attackers disappeared into the night.

It is still unclear what the motive for the attack was and investigations are continuing.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
