SOUTH African rugby giants the Sharks and the Stormers will battle it out against the Western Force from Australia in the international friendlies in Cape Town on January 23.

This was disclosed yesterday by Sharks coach John Plumtree, who said the event will be part of the preparations for the three sides ahead of the Vodacom Super 14 campaign on February 23.

He said the Sharks and the Stormers will meet again in a local pre-season match in Cape Town on January 27.

"These warm-up matches will give the technical staff ample time to check the fitness and readiness of the players.

"The games will also help the players keep in shape ahead of the southern hemisphere tournament next month."

Meanwhile, the Lions will meet tomorrow at Johannesburg Stadium to prepare for the new season. Coaching director Dick Muir said: "We have assembled a formidable team and hope the guys will redeem themselves after a poor showing last season."
