THOSE mourning Makhaya Ntini's exclusion from the third cricket Test should know there is room for sentiment at the highest level of sport.

THOSE mourning Makhaya Ntini's exclusion from the third cricket Test should know there is room for sentiment at the highest level of sport.

Ntini made history by being the first black South African to make 100 Test caps. For that he is a pioneer and legend.

Unfortunately the Mdingi Express has been something of a slowcoach over the last few months.

Had it not been for the goodwill of some he would quite likely have had to wait until he picked up form to claim his magic ton.

We are not agitating for him to quit playing now. He is off-form and if the condition proves to be persistent we trust he will make the right decision in line with his fantastic contribution to cricket.

We would rather remember him as he was at his peak than as the a pale shadow of his former glorious self.
