THE village of Lefiso in Marapyane will today celebrate the life of its revered former teacher, Caroline Kgalaubane Leopeng.
Leopeng died after a long struggle with colon cancer.
Affectionately known in the village as mmamogolo (aunt), she was the first principal of the village's only crèche when the government introduced pre-schools in 1995.
She was born in Seabe village, also in Marapyane, on April 14 1942 and moved to Lefiso in 1978 to teach at a local primary school where she worked for 17 years.
And when the state introduced crèches in 1995, she was appointed principal of Thedi pre-school where she taught for eight years.
She retired in 2003.
"We have lost a true heroine and today we celebrate her life and mourn her death, " said Sam Mmutle, Lefiso village's headman.
"Many people in this village were privileged to have sat on her knee," he said.
A memorial service for Leopeng will be held at her home today.
She is survived by her husband Matloboko and their three children - Tebogo, Happy and Shirley - and eight grandchildren.
Tebogo described his mother as a community anchor and builder who worked tirelessly to build a good society.
She will be buried at Lefiso cemetery on Saturday. The service at Lefiso Roman Catholic Church starts at 6am.
