Motlanthe replaces businessman Cyril Ramaphosa, whose second term ended in September.
Ramaphosa and the chairperson of the university's council, Judge Yvonne Mokgoro, have been made special ambassadors.
Motlanthe's appointment was approved by the council last month. The university said it hoped Motlanthe would help the institution to re-engineer its academic programme. - Chester Makana
