GAUTENG community safety MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu has warned that law enforcers will be unforgiving when South Africans welcome the new year.
His department has been cracking the whip since the start of the festive season. Already 618 minibuses, 40 buses and 118 private cars have been impounded for being unroadworthy.
Mosunkutu, pictured, said the figures reflected only provincial traffic enforcement and numbers would increase when Metro departments consolidated theirs.
"It is unacceptable that people have such little regard for the safety of other people on the roads," he said. "We will pull you over and arrest you if you do not respect the law."
Briefing the media in Johannesburg yesterday Mosunkutu said special attention would be paid to traditionally problematic areas such as Hillbrow and Yeoville in Joburg, Sunnyside, Hatfield and Church Square in Tshwane and Kathorus, Tembisa and Springs in Ekurhuleni.
He was with police chiefs including JMPD boss Chris Ngcobo and Provincial Commissioner Perumal Naidoo.
Mosunkutu said he had had "engagements" with the Liquor Traders' Association with regard to responsible alcohol sale.
Ngcobo said the aim was not to kill the vibrancy of the inner city but to ensure that people celebrated lawfully and without disturbing other people's enjoyment.
He said the police would visit buildings and drinking holes known to be crime hot spots.
