A MAYOR'S cousin has been arrested as one of nine suspects wanted in connection with the theft of R1,6million from the Bela-Bela municipality.

A MAYOR'S cousin has been arrested as one of nine suspects wanted in connection with the theft of R1,6million from the Bela-Bela municipality.

The latest arrest was that of mayor Henrietta Ledwaba's personal assistant in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said seven of the men originally came from Lesotho, while one was from Zimbabwe.

"During the arrests we managed to confiscate four oxygen bottles, a grinder, two gas master oxygen hoses, 15 cellphones and six wrist watches," Ramatseba said.

He said they were also investigating the disappearance of R428741 and six pistols that were stolen from the municipal safe on September 5.

He said the firearms have not been recovered. - Frank Maponya
