Tribute to Prof Dennis Brutus

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, has sent the government's condolences to the family of former sports leader Dennis Brutus.

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, has sent the government's condolences to the family of former sports leader Dennis Brutus.

As an anti-apartheid activist, Professor Brutus was instrumental in lobbying for support for the isolation of whites-only South African teams by Fifa.

Brutus, who promoted the 2010 Fifa World Cup across the globe, died at the weekend aged 86. He spent decades in exile at the forefront of developing strategies for the isolation of South Africa by international sports organisations.

"As a result of small steps he took, notably his successful campaign against all-white sports, our country is today a thousand miles ahead and on the eve of hosting the Fifa World Cup," Nkoana-Mashabane said.
