SOUTH African football players have grown used to everyone making excuses for them each time they take a foolish decisions in their private lives.

SOUTH African football players have grown used to everyone making excuses for them each time they take a foolish decisions in their private lives.

Each time a star goes astray or blows his fortune on some idiotic bling it is argued that the clubs are not giving them proper financial training or life skills.

While there is merit in this argument we must remember that many of these stars are men in their mid to late 20s who should start taking responsibility for their actions.

Their counterparts in every other area of life are already doing that.

Professional players, especially those who are in line to play for the national team in the World Cup in six months, ought to know better than to put their careers and limbs at risk by playing in unofficial tournaments that abound at this time of the year. It is the professional thing to do.
