England give Barmy Army something to sing about

ENGLAND'S band of touring fans, the Barmy Army, might not have had too much to sing about for the past couple of days, but yesterday was their chance to let rip.

ENGLAND'S band of touring fans, the Barmy Army, might not have had too much to sing about for the past couple of days, but yesterday was their chance to let rip.

A devastating spell of bowling by England's off-spinner Graeme Swann and medium pacer Stuart Broad has set up England for an unlikely victory today, the final day of the second Test at Kingsmead Stadium, Durban.

Ripping through the Proteas top order in the second innings, they sent back to the pavilion with indecent haste opening batsman Ashwell Prince (16), Hashim Amla (6), Jacques Kallis (3), AB de Villiers (2) and JP Duminy (0).

Captain Graeme Smith put up some brief resistance before falling for 22.

Stalwart Mark Boucher and lanky fast bowler Morne Morkel were left standing on 20 and 7 respectively, and will hopefully take the Proteas through to an unlikely draw.

Whether the Proteas can withstand the English onslaught today, and for how long, will play itself out on a Kingsmead pitch that appears to be becoming more bowler-friendly as the Test wears on.

Whereas earlier in the game the strip played true, now there are more twists and turns than a game of snakes and ladders.

Though Morkel is not known primarily for his batting prowess, he and Boucher aren't known to raise the white flag either.

Both will dig in and give their all for their country. Whether it is enough remains to be seen.

South Africa ended the day on 76 runs for 6 wickets, still trailing the England first innings by 156 runs.

Play resumes at 9.30am today and will be beamed live on SuperSport2 and SABC3.
