POLICE are looking for a 25-year-old woman who allegedly abandoned her one-month-old daughter with a friend in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, on December 23.
She left the baby with the friend at the Barcelona informal settlement, saying she was going to do last-minute shopping, but has not been seen since.
Captain Thabo Mutsi said yesterday that the baby, identified only as Amahle, was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for medical examination.
Constable Monteza Mathebula said the woman's friend, Nono Mahlangu, who was caring for the baby, alerted the police when the mother did not come back .
"Mahlangu told us that she knew the child's mother as Goodness. They were friends and they had met in Petit where the woman lived with her boyfriend Richard," he said.
"Mahlangu became worried when Goodness failed to return.
"On Thursday she decided to report the case to the police."
