This was after Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka, Safa technical director, was asked by the federation's president Kirsten Nematandani to help them find a coach as a matter of urgency.
Letsoaka was tipped to graduate with the Amajita team that went to Egypt two months ago for the Fifa World Youth Championships.
He has worked with the team since 2005, when they were still part of the Majimbos squad that qualified for the African Under-17 Championships in Gambia.
"I have applied for the position. I am familiar with the Under-23 set-up because I have worked there in the past," Zondo said.
The former Bafana Bafana assistant coach worked with the Under-23s in the past as an assistant to Mitch D'Avray between 1995 and 1997.
At that stage, the team had a galaxy of stars like Pollen Ndlanya, Brendon Silent, Andries Sebola, Thabo Mooki and George Koumantarakis.
The new Under-23 coach, whose responsibility will be to ensure that the team qualifies for the 2012 London Olympics, is expected to be named by Safa before the end of January.
Nematandani said their technical committee and Letsoaka will guide them on the person who should take over the reins.
"It's an urgent matter because we want the new team to start with preparations as soon as possible. The team manager (Barney Kujane) has already presented a programme.
"We will soon have a coach. The boys who went to Egypt will form the core of the team that we will assemble for the 2012 London Olympics."
There are those who want the new Safa leadership to consider Bafana assistant coach Pitso Mosimane for the position.
