AS the year draws to a close, those of us who might feel defeated by the economically and socially tough 2009 can draw lessons British double Olympic swimming gold medallist Rebecca Adlington's take on failure.

After a tough year, which she would have been entitled to want to forget after a slump that saw her struggle to replicate the glory of the Beijing Olympics, Adlington chooses to remember 2009 for the lessons rather than the defeats.

"I'm always going to remember 2009. I will always remember how it felt not to perform.

"I'll never forget those feelings and I am not going to let it happen again," she said.

It has been said that the mark of a true champion is their attitude to failure rather than to glory. Adlington can teach many of us a thing or two about the race of life.
