Gaxa might be heading for greener pastures

FROM being a mainstay of Bafana Bafana despite a strong challenge from Bryce Moon of Panathanaikos, to being a fixture of the Mamelodi Sundowns back four, Siboniso Gaxa has made all the right moves in his career.

FROM being a mainstay of Bafana Bafana despite a strong challenge from Bryce Moon of Panathanaikos, to being a fixture of the Mamelodi Sundowns back four, Siboniso Gaxa has made all the right moves in his career.

The latest buzz around the Sundowns man has been the probability that he could soon pack his bags and head overseas.

Gaxa, who is currently holding an amateur tournament in KwaMashu in his home town of Durban this week, featuring 18 teams, has not shied away from a challenge.

Joining Sundowns when it was brimming with star players, Gaxa carved a niche for himself and has clocked up a total of 29 Bafana Bafana caps since his debut in 2005.

And judging by how he's shrugged off controversy over the the Moon matter, "Pa" also knows when to hold fire.

"If the right team from a country where they play good football in a good league (approaches me), I will go. Two or three teams have shown interest but I'm totally with Downs right now," Gaxa said.

A Bulgarian newspaper reported that Gaxa's boss Hristo Stoichkov told them he wanted the league title in his first season in this country, a sentiment that the 25-year-old shares.

If Sundowns succeed where Ajax and Pirates have failed before them in snatching the title from SuperSport United, this won't be Gaxa's first medal, as he was with United when they won their first title in 2007-2008.

"We have been through some hard times this season. Starting at position nine and being able to say we are league challengers at this point took perseverance. We are not there yet, and when we get back on January 11, the work starts all over," Gaxa said.
