VETERAN soccer coach April "Styles" Phumo has bounced back by guiding Free State amateur side Tower United into the Nedbank Cup last-32 stage.

They beat Mnguni Young Stars from Mpumalanga 2-1 in a playoff match in Vanderbijlpark last weekend.

SAB Regional League affiliates Stars were the only non- Vodacom League club among the nine Safa provincial champions of Ke Yona.

"Tower United are now going to join the other seven clubs that had qualified automatically after the playoff draw was done," said Safa competitions chief Belebetse Monnakgotla.

The seven clubs are FC Royals (Eastern Cape), M Tigers FC (Gauteng), Islands FC (KZN), Peace Lovers FC (Limpopo), Wings United FC (Northern Cape), Als Puk Tawana FC (North West) and Mr Price Parkhurst (Western Cape).

Phumo was roped in by Tower United after he was fired by National First Division side Batau just two months ago.

"We are naturally over the moon to have qualified for the last-32 proper, it's a great platform for the youngsters to make a name for themselves," Phumo said.

Meanwhile, Black Leopards mauled Hanover Park 7-1 in a Ke Yona First Division preliminary round match in Cape Town.

In other matches, Thanda Royal Zulu defeated Bay United 4-3 on penalties, Vasco Da Gama beat United FC 2-1, while University of Pretoria pipped African Warriors 1-0.

Elsewhere, Ikapa Sporting won 2-0 against Batau FC, FC Cape Town emerged 2-1 victors over Witbank Spurs, while Winnerspark are through to the second round after a 4-2 win over Carara Kicks.

The eight teams from the First Division and eight from Safa will join the 16 Absa Premiership clubs in Ke Yona's last 32.

Moroka Swallows are the reigning champions.
