ALL countries have a flag they use to highlight their identity.

Some countries highlight religion in their flags, such as the cross that forms part of many European counties' flags. Some flags illustrate various regions, such as the British Union Jack, which is made up of the flags of England, Ireland and Scotland.

Many flags are made up of three vertical stripes called a tricolour.

These flags were inspired by the red, white and blue of the French flag that was adopted during the French Revolution. - The New Children's Encyclopedia, Dorling Kindersley
