3000 motorists arrested for drunken driving

She was arrested on Christmas Eve in Pietermaritzburg. KwaZulu-Natal police had arrested 583 drunk drivers, the most compared with other provinces this festive season.

More than 3000 drunk drivers have been arrested countrywide since December 1.

Preliminary reports released yesterday show that 840 people died from 654 fatal crashes.

The number comprised 218 drivers, 327 passengers and 295 pedestrians.

Transport Minister Sbusiso Ndebele has reiterated the zero-tolerance by law enforcement on the roads.

"Every year about 14000 people are killed on our roads in South Africa and we cannot allow this to continue," Ndebele said yesterday.

Transport spokesperson Logan Maistry said more than 700 public transport vehicles, including 400 buses and 250 taxis, had been removed from the country's roads.

Thousands of motorists were fined for not wearing seatbelts, and for other offences.

"More than 280000 motorists were fined for speeding, more than 200 motorists have been arrested for reckless and negligent driving," Maistry said.

In the latest accident report, the notorious Moloto Road outside Pretoria claimed four more victims.

A 47-year-old man and his three daughters, aged between eight and 12, were killed when their bakkie was rammed into by a horse and trailer yesterday.

In Gauteng a taxi driver, who was alone, was seriously injured when his taxi overturned in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday afternoon.

In Primrose, a biker and his passenger were killed after he lost control of the motorcycle and rammed into a tree.

The two men were in their 30s.

Five people were seriously injured on the N3 near Mooi River toll plaza in KwaZulu-Natal when an SUV vehicle and another vehicle collided head-on.

On Christmas Day, one person died and two others were injured in a collision on the N1, 50km outside Bloemfontein in Free State, Netcare paramedics said.

Also in Free State on Christmas Eve, four people were critically injured in an accident between Fouriesburg and Bethlehem.

In Polokwane, Limpopo, a man was fighting for his life in hospital after a motorcycle accident on Christmas Eve.
