DEPUTY President Kgalema Motlanthe has urged people to use this Christmas to remember citizens who are "suffering due to the negative effects of the global economic recession".

DEPUTY President Kgalema Motlanthe has urged people to use this Christmas to remember citizens who are "suffering due to the negative effects of the global economic recession".

"During this festive season all of us who can are are compelled to lend a hand to individuals and families that are unable to support themselves, and to show compassion to children that do not have clothes, something to eat or a simple gift to bring a smile to their little faces" Motlanthe said.

President Jacob Zuma is set to issue his New Year's message to the nation.

Various political leaders also issued their messages.

ANCYL president Julius Malema: "We call on the youth to guard against alcohol and drug abuse during festive season. The ANCYL also appeals to young people to take the scourge of HIV-Aids seriously by sticking to one partner, and condomising at all the times."

Cope president Mosioua Lekota: "Our appeal is that you enjoy yourself, but don't overdo it and do not drink and then drive."

Helen Zille, DA: "On behalf of the DA, Helen Zille wishes the Christian community a Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year."

Letlapa Mphahlele, PAC: "We dare not forget that we are the most unequal society on earth.

"The recent shameful attacks on the Zimbabweans in Polokwane, and many violent flare-ups of Afrophobia countrywide, must never be allowed to spill over into 2010."

Mangosuthu Buthelezi, IFP: "My prayer is that we may find inspiration that is not rooted in one event (World Cup), but is founded on our shared commitment to grow, develop and prosper, regardless of the challenges".

Mosibudi Mangena, Azapo: "As we make merry, let us keep in our thoughts our health workers, security personnel and others who have to be on duty during the festive season.

"If we can, let us give them a drink or something to eat".

Themba Godi, president of African Peoples' Convention: "The APC calls on our people to make this one an African Christmas.

"Those who have, should think about those who are facing a bleak festive season and share with them."

Cosatu's Zwelinzima Vavi: "Our hearts and hand of solidarity goes out for all these millions who join other millions in these long queues of unemployment and poverty.
