More than 300 members of four key police units, including crime intelligence detectives, took part in the operation.
The police swoop comes after the shooting of Gamalakhe station commissioner Captain Michele Pitout, Detective-Constable Grant Phelukhwayo and Inspector Trevor Moodley last week.
Pitout is in a critical condition in hospital. They were shot by housebreaking suspects in Tin Town, a section of Gamalakhe township.
Six suspects were arrested, one of whom was killed and two others wounded. The suspects will appear in court soon.
Provincial Police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni, who also took part in Sunday's swoop, later assured residents that the police had reclaimed the community from criminal elements.
Police recovered stolen liquor, illegal weapons and stolen goods.
Soon after the police crackdown, some 1000 residents marched in support of the police action.
"We want to walk freely in our area and we want police to catch the criminals," said Sibisiso Vanda, chairperson of the Gamalakhe Community Policing Forum. - Mary Papayya
