JOHANNESBURG traffic officers have dropped the standard alcohol breathaliser test for the more technically advanced Drager Intoxicator.

Using the new device, traffic spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said 62 people were arrested in Soweto, Randburg and the Johannesburg CBD at the weekend for exceeding the permitted limit of 0,24mg of alcohol in the blood.

"The device has a keypad which captures the suspect's name, ID number, time and date (of the offence).

"That saves us the trouble of taking that person for a blood test," Minnaar said.
