Foreplay at the Market

PAUL Grootboom'sForeplay will have another season at Johannesburg's Market Theatre in the new year.

The producers say the re-run was necessitated by the success of the play's first run earlier this year.

It was also well attended at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria where it was first performed this year before making its way to the Market Theatre.

The play is a modern South African adaptation of Arthur Schnizler's Reigen (usually known as La Ronde).

Here you will follow a series of 10 interconnected love scenes, brought from 1890s Vienna into the vivid and distinctive world of Grootboom's South Africa in 2008.

The scenes and structure have been altered to fit specific South African situations and though the circular structure of the original play has been maintained, here the adaptation revolves around the world of theatre - focusing on the two central protagonists - a poet-playwright and an actress.

Using the South African manner of storytelling, the play consists of six actors playing 10 roles.

Grootboom acts as a narrator of sorts, connecting one vignette to another until the circle is completed at the end.

Please note that if you are under 16, you will not be allowed into the theatre because of the play's sexual content. The play opens on January 11.

The cast of Foreplay is Koketso Mojela, Mandla Gaduka, Sello Zikalala, Ntshepiseng Montshiwa and Boitumelo Shisana.
