AMERICAN television reality competition Momma's Boys, currently on SABC3, is packed with entertainment.

The dating series, which aired in the US on NBC from December 16 2008, has been adapted by the local broadcaster for SABC3. The show, which started two weeks ago, airs on Mondays at 8pm and has already shown that it is an excellent programme.

The series centres on three possessive yet loving mothers who must help their complacent sons choose the perfect woman and eventually pose the ultimate question. What makes the show even more interesting is that it's the mothers and not the fathers who guide their sons.

Over the course of seven weeks viewers will watch intense, emotional showdowns and rivalries, as well as raw, personal moments between mother and son.

All of this will unfold as 32 single women try to catch the attention of three eligible bachelors and their mothers who live with them throughout the series. The men make the decisions about whether each woman should stay or go, but the mothers actively seek to influence their sons' decisions.

Momma's Boys uncovers the conflicts between a mother's wishes and a son's desires and reveals the truth about who plays a more crucial role in a young man's life.

After watching the show one is left with questions such as: when will South Africa produce its own, original reality shows? Local producers and writers need to challenge themselves to think hard about this.
