BLOUBERG local municipality mayor Serite Sekgoloane celebrated his birthday in style yesterday when he dished out Christmas toys and toiletries to vulnerable and orphaned children.

Sekgoloane, 39, also gave food parcels to 20 indigent families. The event was held at the Aganang community bakery in Sekgoloane's home village of Mokwena Naledi.

More than 800 children benefited. Many of the children have no parents and head families orphaned by HIV-Aids. They were identified by ward councillors and street committees in conjunction with development workers.

Sekgoloane, who is deputy chairperson of the ANC in the Capricorn region, is a married father of two girls aged nine and 13.

He said: "It takes two parents to give birth to a baby but it takes the whole community to raise a child."
