THE year 2009 has been an eventful and complicated one for promoter S'Phatho Handi, pictured.
It got off to the worst possible start for him with the tragic death of WBF featherweight champion Ludumo Galada in a car accident.
While Handi was still reeling from that tragedy, Samora Msophi also died from injuries he sustained in a national junior flyweight title fight against Mfundo Gwayana on June 27.
This is definitely a year Handi will want to forget quickly. Tonight, however, he gets the chance to end the year on a high when he presents the last tournament of the year at Orient Theatre in Mdantsane.
It is a joint venture with Koko Godlo. Their tournament features an SA junior featherweight bout between holder Thando "Slugger" Vukuza and Sabelo Jubatha, while Noni Tenge and Fransieska Mbang will fight for the vacant WBF female welterweight strap.
"We are closing it (the year) on a positive note," said Handi. "We will start (2010) on a very positive note with Nkosinathi Joyi fighting for the IBF mini flyweight belt in February.
"Molefi Matima, 2008 champ in the Baby Champs, will on February 19 fight for the vacant WBF featherweight belt that was vacated by Takalani Ndlovu.
"Matima will fight Siyabulela Ziqula."
Tonight, Molefi will fight Simphiwe Foba over six rounds. Only the Vukuza-Jubatha 12-rounder will enjoy live coverage on Blow by Blow at 10pm.
l Dorothy Jonas, mother of Boxing SA board member Archie Jonas, will be buried in Aliwal North tomorrow. She died on Tuesday after a long illness. She was 86.
