Weather puts damper on Dynamos vs Lions match

A NEDBANK Cup National First Division (NFD) preliminary round match between Dynamos and Nathi Lions was abandoned at Nkowankowa Stadium outside Tzaneen yesterday, owing to heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch.

A NEDBANK Cup National First Division (NFD) preliminary round match between Dynamos and Nathi Lions was abandoned at Nkowankowa Stadium outside Tzaneen yesterday, owing to heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch.

Referee Thabo Nkosi and match commissioner George Boodhoo decided to call off the match in the fourth minute of extra time. The two teams were level at 1-all.

Boodhoo said three factors contributed to the abandonment of the match.

"There was a heavy downfall, lightning and also poor floodlights at the stadium, which would not have (allowed) the match to continue.

"The Premier Soccer League will decide on the new date for the replay, which will be communicated to the teams as soon as the date has been decided," he said.

Dynamos, who are campaigning in the Inland Stream of NFD, were the first to score through defender Allan Kamanga in the 18th minute after a goalmouth scramble.

The visitors, who compete in the Coastal Stream, levelled the score through substitute Themba Makhoba in the 50th minute. The match is one of many that have been affected by rain this summer.

Absa Premiership games were also abandoned in recent weeks. The league has rescheduled these matches for next week.
