We want to correct the distortions and put the record straight.
Firstly, it is a misnomer to say the "provincial executive committee did not support the appointment of Mkhatshwa".
The ANC Gauteng province cannot take a one-size-fits-all approach to deployment matters because the organisation has deployment guidelines that must be followed . The process has to be meticulous so that deployment is not compromised.
Secondly, the matter of the appointment is still under discussion with the province and the Tshwane region. This relates to the deployment of an appropriate cadre. The province or region cannot take a unilateral view regarding deployment. There has to be thorough consultation, dialogue and agreement on the appropriate person. It is a very important position and it must be properly scrutinised and proper deployment procedures should be adhered to. We understand that the position has been vacant for so long, but the province cannot take short cuts to such a sensitive matter.
Thirdly, it is fallacious to say, "The province did not support Mkhatshwa for fear that he would overshadow Ramokgopa". There is no leadership competition in the province. Leaders work as a collective to strengthen government and to serve the people. We have experienced cadres by virtue of past deployment. When the ANC deploys, it considers the level and capacity of experience.
Lastly, we are chagrined that the writer wrote a one-sided story without soliciting the views of the province. Masombuka quoted anonymous sources. He should have interviewed me to clarify how ANC structures function.
