GAMALAKHE police station commander in Port Shepstone on the South Coast was critically wounded in a shooting with at least three gunmen , Margate police said.

Captain Michelle Pitout was rushed to hospital in a critical condition yesterday after being wounded.

Margate police spokesperson captain Gerald Mfeka said: "She was shot in the head, chest and arm."

Two other male officers were also shot in the incident.

One of them was shot in the back and one in the face. Their names were not immediately available.

The police shot and killed two of the attackers and wounded one.

"We are still investigating whether there are more suspects," Mfeka said.

Mfeka said the shooting took place yesterday morning when one of the officers took Pitout to a suspect's house to arrest him.

"There was a break-in at the officer's house and he knew who it was," Mfeka said.

"The suspect resisted arrest and that's when the shooting started." The police were still at the scene.

Netcare 911 Spokesperson Jeff Wicks said one of the seriously injured officers bundled his wounded colleagues into a police vehicle and rushed them to Margate Private Hospital. - Sapa
