TWO KILLED OVER THEFT

A TEENAGER and a man were killed in separate incidents after the theft of a cellphone and an armed robbery in Pienaar Trust near Mbombela on Sunday evening.

A TEENAGER and a man were killed in separate incidents after the theft of a cellphone and an armed robbery in Pienaar Trust near Mbombela on Sunday evening.

Mbombela is the former Nelspruit. In the latest incident a 23-year-old man allegedly sneaked through the back door of a house where a family was busy enjoying supper at about 7pm.

The police said the family suddenly heard someone instructing them to raise their hands before they were confronted by a man pointing a gun at them.

The suspect demanded money from the woman, who sells fruit and vegetables.

He also demanded a cellphone from one of her teenage sons.

Before the woman could give the suspect money one of the sons told the man he wanted to remove his SIM card before handing over his cellphone.

"An argument ensued and a 17-year-old boy, one of the women's children, made use of the opportunity to overpower him," KaNyamazane police spokesperson Inspector Andries Sikwambana said yesterday.

He said the other family members joined in taking hold of the robber while the woman shouted for help. Members of the community came to their rescue.

"Community members used an assortment of objects to assault the suspect, killing him on the spot," Sikwambana said.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old boy died after a father and his son assaulted him for allegedly stealing a cellphone on Sunday evening at about 6pm.

The two are expected to appear before the KaNyamazane periodical court today.
