AS the festive season nears transport authorities have appealed to road users to be more cautious.
Motorists have been urged to be alert to the wet weather conditions and thunderstorms that might batter Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng during the holidays.
The appeal was made by Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele.
At least 186 people - comprising 58 drivers, 75 passengers and 53 pedestrians - have died in road accidents since the beginning of this month.
"We want to reiterate that safety in all modes of transport is a key priority of our government," Ndebele said.
"Traffic volumes will increase this week with schools now closed for the holidays, and we want to appeal to all road users to exercise caution on the roads."
He called on road users to join hands and reverse the trend of road deaths, saying almost 90percent of road crashes were caused by human error and the commissioning of a traffic offence.
More than 690 drunk drivers were arrested in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal since the beginning of the month.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Thandi Moya said many road accidents were caused by the violation of traffic rules.
She urged motorists to obey the rules to enhance road traffic safety.
"The law enforcement authorities will tighten the screws to rid our roads of disobedient drivers," said Moya.
