This after a four-year-old boy drowned at his home in Pinetown, outside Durban, while another, aged six, is still in a serious condition after nearly drowning at a Ballito resort.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said both incidents happened on Sunday. He said paramedics arrived on the scene in Pinetown to find members of the public administering CPR in the family's driveway.
"The paramedics initiated advanced life support treatment and transported the young boy to Life Entabeni Hospital. Emergency personnel worked frantically to save him.
"Unfortunately, after a long battle, the boy was declared dead," he said.
Banks urged parents or childminders to ensure their children's safety at all times and make sure that swimming pools are fenced off and covered with nets.
"We are asking parents or childminders to please be aware of children at all times, especially around swimming pools. Please make sure that the swimming pools are fenced in and that the gates are locked."
In a separate incident a six-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a near drowning.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Jeff Wicks said: "The child had been swimming in a hotel's pool when the incident happened.
"He was pulled from the water by others around him when they noticed him at the bottom of the pool. Paramedics were called to the scene and took steps to resuscitate him.
"The child was initially motionless and unresponsive when medics started their resuscitation attempt.
"His level of consciousness increased and he was stabilised before being transported to the Stanger hospital," Wicks said.
