THANDI Kubheka (not her real name) survived a seven-hour gang rape by eight men on Friday in a shack in Swaneville, Kagiso, on the West Rand.

She was then allegedly called a bitch for reporting the matter to the police.

Rubbing salt in the wound, her mother and brother were arrested a day later when they returned from hospital with her.

Five of the eight men have since been arrested and the police are still looking for the other three.

Thandi, 15, a Grade 7 pupil, was lured by a neighbour to a shack, not knowing what the teenage boy had in mind.

She spoke to Sowetan about her ordeal guided by her uncle.

"He asked me to accompany him to buy ice cream at the shops so I went with him," Thandi said.

"We bought ice cream and then went to a shack where he made me wait outside.

"While I was waiting seven other boys came and took me into the shack where they took turns raping me.

"It all started at 11am and I was only rescued by a neighbour who heard my screams at 6.30pm."

Thandi was taken to the Leratong Hospital where she was treated.

On Saturday Thandi, accompanied by her mother, went back to hospital for further treatment but when she returned home things got worse.

"One of the boys' sisters confronted us and started assaulting me, my mom and brother," she said.

"They (sisters) asked me why I had reported the rape because I was still alive and not dead. They called me a bitch."

Thandi and her mother were saved by her uncle Michael (not his real name), who took her mother and brother to the police station to lay an assault charge.

"We were shocked to find those women at the station and they had also laid assault and malicious damage of property charges against my sister and her son," said the uncle.

"The police arrested the boy's sister, Thandi's mother and my nephew," Michael said.

Thandi's mother and brother spent the weekend behind bars.

Police spokesperson Inspector Solomon Sibiya confirmed the rape.
