Suspended councillors told to go back to work

ANC provincial secretary Joe Maswanganyi has ordered all the party's councillors who were suspended for inefficiency, laziness, or being linked to Cope, to go back to work.

ANC provincial secretary Joe Maswanganyi has ordered all the party's councillors who were suspended for inefficiency, laziness, or being linked to Cope, to go back to work.

Maswanganyi told the councillors to ignore their suspension letters and report for work.

The 25 councillors were suspended by the Peter Mokaba region after an audit report linked them to Cope. Aganang municipal mayor Manoko Masegela and chief whip John Galane were also suspended for being "lazy and inefficient".

The suspensions on Wednesday last week were sanctioned by the party's regional secretary James Mankge with the blessing of chairperson Lawrence Mapoulo.

But four days after the suspensions Mankge and Mapoulo were allegedly called to a special meeting with Maswanganyi where they were told to explain why they had suspended the councillors.

Maswanganyi said yesterday: "As far as the ANC in the province is concerned, the region has no powers to suspend councillors without first consulting with the provincial leadership."
