Initially, four commuters died and 66 others were injured when the driver of the Putco bus lost control of the vehicle and overturned on the killer road near the Kameeldrift police station at about 5am.
Akasia Hospital marketing officer Chantelle Bester yesterday confirmed the death of one of the injured commuters who had been admitted to the hospital.
She also said one of the victims was still in the hospital's ICU while three others were in the surgical ward.
Attempts by Sowetan to find out if there were any developments regarding the accident were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, a meeting between the Mpumalanga and Gauteng MECs for public works, roads and transport, Putco management and officials from the Dr JS Moroka and Sithembisile municipalities in the former KwaNdebele homeland is scheduled to take place on Monday.
The meeting, to be held at a resort in Moloto Road, is an attempt to find a solution to the repeated fatal accidents on the road that links the two provinces.
Meanwhile, a 56-year-old bus driver was arrested yesterday in Kyalami for allegedly speeding, Johannesburg metro police said.
"He was travelling at 121km/h in an 80km/h zone," said Inspector Phindhani Tebeila.
The bus belonged to Putco. The driver was detained at the Midrand police station.
