THE IFP-aligned South African Student Movement has made a passionate plea to learners to refrain from indulging in alcohol and drug abuse during this festive season.

Sadesmo national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said yesterday that with the academic year ending tomorrow, it was imperative for young people to be responsible in "their fun and social activities".

Hlengwa urged all parents to exercise control and responsibility over the festive season while driving to and from holiday destinations. He said road safety has to be upheld at all times and children's safety ensured.

"The odd weather patterns experienced recently demand that extra caution be exercised on the road," Hlengwa said.

"The high level of road accidents are totally unacceptable and transgressors should not go unpunished."

Hlengwa said because of the 2010 World Cup in June the holidays are very short. He encouraged teachers and pupils to get maximum rest so that they can hit the ground running next year.

"Alcohol and drug abuse tend to increase during this time of the year, so we urge all pupils to refrain from drinking and using drugs," he said.
