Nurses are the heartbeat of any healthcare system. Our health system lacks compassion and quality care because there is a shortage of thousands of nurses.
When there are no nurses there is a very real problem. Understanding this is a basic first step to rectifying the situation in our hospitals. We can have the best medical technology in the world - in fact, we have - but it is the human factor that makes the difference.
It is in this sense that we applaud Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi's intention to reopen nursing colleges. Let' start in January 2010. South Africans deserve it.
