"South Africa has enough accommodation for 2010. We have at least 202000 rooms available," he said.
"A total 107000 of those rooms are graded by the Grading Council of SA. So we are confident we will be able to deal with whatever for the duration of the World Cup.".
An estimated 450000 people are expected to visit South Africa during the course of the six-week event, set to kick off on June 11.
Van Schalkwyk said he was "very satisfied" with the results of a recent accommodation audit - conducted by his department - that showed there was sufficient accommodation.
"This audit has given us the a comprehensive overview of the kind of accommodation establishments in South Africa. The resulting national accommodation database will be a powerful tourism tool long beyond the World Cup," he said.
The main findings of the audit included:
lThere were at least 18882 accommodation establishments in South Africa, of which 7492 were graded, and 11390 ungraded;
lThere were at least 202712 rooms in the country, of which 107119 were graded and 95593 ungraded;
lThere were at least 7520 accommodation establishments in host cities, within a 50km radius of stadiums; and
lThere were at least 100853 rooms in host cities, within a 50km radius of stadiums.
