Invitation XI to face England

A YOUNG and talented team dubbed the SA Invitation XI will tackle the England cricket team in two consecutive two-day matches at Buffalo Park, East London, from today.

A YOUNG and talented team dubbed the SA Invitation XI will tackle the England cricket team in two consecutive two-day matches at Buffalo Park, East London, from today.

Led by wily campaigner Wendell Bossenger of Griqualand West, the tyros realise it's a golden opportunity for them to perform on a global stage and at the same time cement their places in the SA Under-19 team, a senior first-class team or even a franchise.

The bulk of the team have come through the ranks and some have spent time at the South African National Academy.

Northerns' Blake Snijman is a no-nonsense, solid opener who will be a mentor to the young batsmen.

For England the two games will be important for the batsmen and bowlers to get back on the field after virtually two weeks of inactivity due to the weather.

The recently arrived Mark Davies of Durham, who was called up as cover for James Anderson, will also be able to use the games to get completely match-fit after arriving in South Africa a day or two ago from the middle of an English winter. - Sapa
