TWO people died when the car in which they were travelling overturned and smashed into a cliff outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo at the weekend.

The accident happened near the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnel on the N1 road at about 9pm on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Captain Maano Sadike said eight Zimbabweans were travelling in the car when the driver lost control and the car was flung against the cliff.

Sadike said a two-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman died.

The car was on its way from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg when the accident happened.

Sadike said the other six passengers sustained injuries were taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment.

He said the relationship between the dead boy and woman was still unknown.

"We are investigating a case of culpable homicide," Sadike said.

"The relationship between the two dead people is still unknown but is the subject of further police investigation."

He said they were investigating the speed at which the car was travelling when it was involved in the accident, but the exact cause of the accident was still unknown.

"In the same breadth, we would like to call on people to drive safely and avoid unnecessary speeding in order to prevent accidents on the roads this festive season," Sadike said.
