IT IS an indisputable fact that time is a key element in the police's tackling of crime as well as in their responding to distress calls from the public promptly.

IT IS an indisputable fact that time is a key element in the police's tackling of crime as well as in their responding to distress calls from the public promptly.

As any police officer will attest, every second is critical for the police whenever that urgent call to a scene of the crime comes and so is the ability of those in distress to reach help timeously.

But a shoddy service can stand in the way of this crucial element of policing.

So, we want to record our outrage at yesterday's reports by the Democratic Party that more than a third of the phone numbers for South African police stations do not work.

Incredible. Police bosses have a lot of explaining to do in the wake of this embarrassing revelation, especially at a time when their ability to commandeer the security for the 2010 World Cup is in the global spotlight.
