RESIDENTS of Morapalala village in Bolobedu near Tzaneen in Limpopo live in fear of thugs who steal electric cables at night.

The residents said the criminals started stealing cables at the beginning of the month.

Village headman Ngwako Mathekga said they targeted families where there were only young children or pensioners.

A villager said izinyoka (people who steal electric cables) had stolen cables at three houses last week.

The villagers also said they were disturbed by the murder of a pensioner on Sunday morning. The deceased was found by passers-by at the back of her hut.

Villagers suspect that the pensioner might have been robbed of her pension money before she was killed.

"We urge police to conduct regular patrols in our area, particularly at night," said a resident.

Bolobedu police confirmed that they were investigating a case of murder.Provincial police spokesperson Superintendent Ronel Otto said they would conduct regular patrols in the area to make sure all people were safe this festive season.

Otto called on members of the community to assist police by exposing criminals.

According to residents, it was difficult for them to confront criminals because the "local police forum was dysfunctional".
