A LOCAL teacher has proven that hard work is rewarding by scooping the prestigious African ICT Achiever's Award at the weekend.

Mmipe George Mokgehle was awarded a certificate of excellence at a function at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg, on Saturday.

The award is given in recognition of teachers who have contributed to improving information communication technology skills among pupils.

Mokgehle, 54, is a teacher at the Toronto Primary School in Mankweng outside Polokwane.

The contest was between teachers from all parts of the continent.

Only three of them qualifying for the finals and all three finalists were South Africans. They outdid their contemporaries before Mokgehle ultimately went home with the award.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday Mokgehle said he was happy to have achieved the feat despite coming from a rural school where there was a shortage of resources.

"The fact that I came from a rural school in Limpopo did not deter me from working hard to realise my dream," Mokgehle said.

"I'm happy that I finally achieved my dream and will continue to work hard to ensure that I change the lives of pupils in my school.

Mokgehle is not new to winning sought-after awards.

He had previously won the IT Super Teacher of the Year competition in 2007.

That was followed by the Microsoft Peer Review Award last year.
