This year almost 582000 pupils sat for the examinations.
The biggest hiccup in this year's exams was the leaking of five exam papers in Mpumalanga, said education department chief director Nkosinathi Sishi. The leaked papers were Maths Paper 1 and 2, Physical Science Paper 1 and 2 and Accounting.
Thirteen people, including an education department typist and teacher, were arrested.
"Leaking is the ultimate sin. I am unhappy about the fact that once you report a leak it adds stress to those pupils who still have to write," Sishi said.
The department had earlier announced that there were 12 incidents during the exams, but that these had not affected the exams' integrity.
Gauteng started marking two weeks ago while Mpumalanga started on Wednesday. All provinces have to complete marking on December 18.
Quality Assurer Umalusi will have to declare the exams credible before results can be released on January 7 next year.
The department promised that there would not be a repeat of last year's chaos where pupils did not receive their results.
