A PREGNANT woman from Soweto, who fell victim to Lulu's illegal abortion scam, is considering taking legal action.

Ntombi Duma (not her real name) says she was duped into believing that the gastric ulcer pills would help her abort her unborn child. But she gave up after three attempts and Lulu refused to refund her the R700 she had paid her.

Duma met Lulu a month ago when she was seven months pregnant and desperate to have an abortion. An advert in a daily newspaper for a "safe and painless abortion" led her to Lulu, who until the Sowetan exposé this week operated at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath taxi rank.

"I phoned the number and Lulu answered. I explained that I was seven months pregnant and needed her help."

Lulu and Duma agreed to meet the following day at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.

"I phoned her the minute I jumped off the taxi. After a few minutes she arrived. We chatted before I gave her R700. She gave me five pills. She told me they would work but if they didn't I should return and she would give me another set of pills," Duma said.

The first set of pills did not work. She contacted Lulu, who then offered her more pills. They still did not work. Determined, she went back a third time. And when nothing happened she demanded a refund.

"She refused to give me my money. Instead, she offered more pills but I could not take them because I feared they might kill me. She then said I should come later for a refund.

"Now she does not answer my calls. I want to open a case against her because she is a fraud. She gives people pills that do not work and then refuses to refund them."

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent Noxolo Kweza said the police were investigating the delay in police reaction in the matter.

"We have noted with concern the article published in Sowetan on Tuesday about the illegal sale of abortion pills. This matter is receiving our urgent attention," Kweza said.
