Diski dance will rattle London

AT 4pm tomorrow London's Trafalgar Square will be abuzz with the biggest number of people performing the hit "diski dance".

AT 4pm tomorrow London's Trafalgar Square will be abuzz with the biggest number of people performing the hit "diski dance".

The event is organised by the South African High Commission and SA Tourism in conjunction with Continental, an official Fifa 2010 World Cup sponsor.

This will be part of the razzmatazz ahead of the live World Cup draw at the Cape Town International Convention Centre later. The draw is scheduled for 7pm.

South African footballers are known for their flair on the football pitch which is usually followed by fans dancing to celebrate after a match. Diski is slang for football.

A creation of SA Tourism ahead of the Confederations Cup early this year, the diski dance imitates the flair and skills of South African football players and fans dancing to celebrate after a match.

It is done with an imaginary ball.

Organisers have encouraged all Londoners to participate, and confirmed that they will cross over live to Cape Town at 5.15pm via a feed from the BBC.

High commissioner Zola Skweyiya is confident that a large number of the almost one million South Africas living in the UK will converge on Trafalgar Square.

He is also encouraging other nationalities to join in the festivities.

"While the main event is taking place in Cape Town, the World Cup is universal. London is a home to people from all over the world.

This event celebrates this and welcomes everyone to come and join in the festivities and excitement as they discover who their favourite teams will be playing against in next year's tournament in South Africa," said Skweyiya.
