KWAZULU-Natal's "war on poverty" was given a new meaning when MEC for local government and traditional affairs Nomusa Dube delivered services to the poor community of KwaMkhizwane near Durban.
Yesterday Dube practically took government services to the poorest of the poor when the province's war on poverty programme coincided with World Aids Day.
Premier Zweli Mkhize and all the MECs were deployed to various regions of the province to lead anti-poverty and developmental programmes.
This was the provincial government's bid to make sure that service delivery does take place as promised by the ANC in the run-up to the April election.
Hundreds of people came to KwaMkhizwane to receive food parcels, wheelchairs and walking sticks. Others applied for identity documents while others wanted help to process different kinds of grants.
Health officials screened people for cervical cancer and TB, and helped with eye problems, diabetes, blood pressure and other common ailments.
Dube visited the household of bed-ridden Mjojo Ndlovu. She told Ndlovu that she had come to the area to see how people battled to make ends meet and give aid to all those struggling to feed their children.
She promised Ndlovu that health officials who were part of her entourage would make sure he was taken to hospital.
"The fight against poverty remains the cornerstone of this government's programme of action. This we will do through a number of interventions," Dube promised.
Dube, who also inspected a communal garden in the area, said all the work involved a coordinated effort by all provincial departments in partnership with local government.
The women responsible for the garden asked her to do something about the prolonged water shortages in the area.
Dube also visited a poor family whose house had burnt down in a recent wild fire.
She instructed local traditional leaders, including the councillor, to fast-track the process of providing the necessary aid to the family.
