Sowetan has been reliably informed that Steenbok impressed the panel appointed by Safa to interview prospective coaches for the job.
Panel members included Safa technical director Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka, coaching education head Kenneth "Conti" Kubheka and women's national teams manager Fran Hilton-Smith.
Others included Safa junior national teams head Stanley Tshabalala and Safa Limpopo provincial coach Frans Mogashoa.
Steenbok is the head of development at Kaizer Chiefs.
He has been working as a development coach for some time. He also coached Hellenic in the Premiership after the club was bought by Ekurhuleni businessman Dumisani Ndlovu.
Attempts to get comment from Steenbok, who has also represented University Sports South Africa as a defender, were unsuccessful.
A source at Safa told Sowetan yesterday that Steenbok was highly impressive during the interviews.
"The panel has recommended him to Safa's national executive after Walter did extremely well during the interviews.
"The man is highly knowledgeable when it comes to development soccer. The final decision regarding the appointment of an Under-17 women's team coach will be made by Safa."
Sowetan has also learnt that the panel is still finalising its recommendation regarding the coach of Basetsana, the national Under-20 women's team.
"Interviews were done but we are waiting for the panel to submit its recommendations," added the source, who preferred to remain anonymous.
