'EARLY LEARNING VITAL FOR KIDS'

EARLY childhood education is the key to grooming responsible adults.

This is according to The Unlimited Child, a company based in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.

As part of creating awareness and encouraging people to know their HIV status, the company yesterday displayed a gigantic 30-metre long condom over the Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse.

The condom, which took more than three hours to put up, was built over two weeks.

Iain Buchan, the founder of The Unlimited Child, said there are 1,65million children between the ages of 0-5 years in KwaZulu-Natal.

Less than 20percent of these have access to any kind of early childhood development programmes.

"It took the tragic death of my housekeeper's granddaugther's parents from HIV-Aids and her failing Grade 1 to make me aware of the twin tragedy of children being orphaned by HIV-Aids.

"The lack of development at this early stage has a massively limiting effect on people achieving their potential," he said.

"In taking action, we will break the downward spiral caused by insufficient early education."
