THE recent pronouncements by President Jacob Zuma and the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi in the days leading up to International World Aids Day, which was commemorated yesterday, are quite refreshing.

Historically, all the previous regimes have drastically failed to show political leadership in so far as the scourge of HIV-Aids is concerned. Perhaps during the apartheid era it was to be expected that this grave issue that continues to ravage, maim and systematically kill our people would be swept under the blood-stained carpet.
However, the ANC-led government from the era of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma up to the present leadership, notwithstanding all the shortcomings, the scandals, the controversies and the denials, has definitely shown a remarkable commitment towards alleviating the plight of millions of our people.
I was particularly impressed to hear Motsoaledi indicate that the target is to increase accessibility to treatment to at least 80percent of those who are already living with HIV through the antiretroviral treatment roll-out plan within the next 5 years.
Needless to say, this augurs well for raising the hopes of ensuring that the desperate lives of the infected can be sustained and prolonged and that our people can continue to lead a meaningful, productive and successful life with HIV.
As I have indicated many times before, what may seem to be an impossible dream and the ultimate challenge remains the discovery of a permanent cure in the long run and a vaccine in the near future. Hopefully, this dream will be accomplished in our lifetime. When all is said and done, when the ducks are all in a row, when the whole dark cloud has been removed from above our heads, there is no doubt that even the doubting Thomases cannot wait for that glorious day to dawn.
A cure for HIV is a dream that I will carry to my grave because I fully comprehend that this is the only means through which the lives of millions of all our people across the world can be spared. Therefore, I appeal to the depths of your infected souls that you may kindly join me in prayer, in silence or at the top of your voices, as we collectively seek the most divine intervention to curb the ever increasing loss of life.
