breakthrough after farm attack

THE police have arrested two men in connection with the armed robbery of a farmer and his wife at Richmond in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The elderly couple, Anthony Morris and his wife Carol, were accosted by armed men at their Maywood Farm on Sunday morning.

The couple was seriously injured when the men assaulted and stabbed them during the attack.

It is alleged that the two men had entered the Morris home and forced the couple into a bedroom, where they were bound and gagged.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeeven said a 25-year-old man was arrested at Indaleni yesterday.

Jeeven said the police returned to the area and arrested another 30-year-old man in connection with the armed robbery.

She said police from Richmond and the Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit had conducted an intelligence-driven operation in the area.

"During the operation the police proceeded to the Indaleni area, where they made a breakthrough and arrested the suspects.

"They returned to the area in the afternoon and arrested another suspect," she said.

Jeeven said about R20000, three firearms, clothing and cellphones were stolen at the couple's house.

"The couple is recovering at the Pietermaritzburg City Hospital, where they are believed to be in a stable condition," she said.

She said police recovered a shotgun and a .22 rifle, two cellphones, clothing and a sports bag containing a number of live rounds.

"We are investigating the probability of a possible link between the attacks on the Maywood farm and the Waterford farm.

"The suspects are expected to appear in the Richmond magistrate's court soon," Jeeven said.

Local station commissioner Superintendent Jody Riley attributed the success of the operation to team effort between various police role players, the community and a security company.
